Rebecca Cheptegi, the 44th destination in the marathon content at the Paris 2024 Olympics is critical after she burns 75%. Police Kenya said her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, was the number one suspect. This person burned the house where the two were living.
“We regret to announce that our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegi, who played at the Paris 2024 Olympics, was seriously injured and was being treated at Moi Hospital in Eldoret,” the Uganda Athletics Federation announced.
According to the police, the number one suspect was also injured by burning but he was burned lighter. Dickson Ndiema Marangach is being treated at the hospital under the close supervision of the police.
Cheptegie's parents said their daughter bought real estate and this house in her name. Cheptegie wants to use it to build a training facility while her boyfriend disagrees. Most likely this is the reason for the horror.
Cheptegie was ranked 44th in the women's marathon at the 2024 Olympics. She also ranked 14th in the Athletics World Championship in 2023.
Cheptegie's incident raises safety concerns for female athletes in Kenya. In October 2021, Agnes Tirop athlete was stabbed to death at home. Meanwhile, in July 2021, Damaris Muthee Mutua, another athlete, died at her boyfriend's home. The autopsy report said she was strangled.
